Aug. 9th, 2003 06:08 pmYou know how in middle (and elementry, and high school for that matter) they spent all that time trying to hammer the writing process into your head? My most vivid memory of all this is writing a 20 page X-Files fanfic for Mr. Hickory's Language Arts class, conferencing with people who knew nothing about The X-Files, and then faking a teacher conference because he didn't have the time to do one with me. Later, my mom spoke to him and he told her (and I quote) "They can write crap for all I care, as long as they learn the process."
Well, forgive me for being dense, but why?
Honestly, the writing process is supposed to resemble the kind of relationship an author has with his/her editor, right? The constant revisions and sharing of ideas (not that it even succeeds in this regard). Well, (and I'm just spitballing here, so please correct me if I'm wrong) wouldn't something like that only be useful to potential authors and editors? And how many kids are going to become authors or editors, especially if we teach them that the important thing is the process, not the content? Basically, the writing process is an early lesson in politics: do what the teacher says, get the good grade. Talent, skill, and effort have nothing to do with it. And then the damn kids never learn grammar, since they have no incentive, and we end up with some of the atrocious garbage that's on FF.net.
Okay, I'm done. Now I'm gonna go see Seabiscuit again.
