Jan. 23rd, 2004 08:58 amWell, yesterday I had my mysteries in film class, during which I showed off my pathetically extensive mad knowledge of Sherlock Holmes and referenced The English Patient. It's really sad, the theories some people had. In particular these two middle aged women who are, I believe, grad students studying law. One of them suggested that Holmes kept Irene Adler's picture in order to blackmail her at a later date. Aside from the fact that that makes absolutely no sense...it makes absolutely no sense. I feel bad for the poor teacher, since she's younger than these women and they keep harrassing her about things and assuming they know more than her. Which they don't. Not at all. But anyway. I brought up the Holmes=Moriarty theory, which people seemed to like.
Then we watched The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, which is one of the two Holmes movies I've actually seen. It was cheesier than I remembered, but Alan Arkin was cute as Freud (yeah, that's therapy waiting to happen right there). And thanks to my Freud class, I had all this crazy knowledge of Freud so I was suitably impressed when Holmes deduced that he came from Moravia. Other than that, insert paragraph on Holmes/Watson here. (Although Holmes was played by the guy who played Merlin in Excalibur. Such a bad movie. Redefines bad movies.)
Tonight I'm going to see The Exorcist, which should be...good, I think. I don't normally like horror movies. And the house is screening Lawrence of Arabia at some point, which I may have to clear out my schedule for.
Anyway, back to my reading on mise en scene. The reading that was due Wednesday...
