Sep. 14th, 2004 03:27 pmI went and saw I <3 Huckabees last night. It ended up being only 6 people from our floor, which is really pretty pathetic, but whatever.
It was a good movie. The director said it was based on a dream he had, and that was pretty apparent. It was one of those style over substance jaunts that I seem to enjoy (and the cinematographer was the guy who did Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, and...Austin Powers). Mark Wahlberg (yes, you read that right) of all people impressed me with his crazed rantings about petrolium and throwing of garlic bread at people. Or maybe I just like angry characters. That's entirely possible. ("God gave us oil! If he didn't want us to have it, why would he give it to us?!?!?" "I dunno, he gave you a brain and you managed to fuck that up pretty good.") Oh, there was also a lot of slashy male bonding. Which was fun.
Then, for the Q&A, we got not only the director but Jason Schwartzman. He looked just like a regular guy, actually. Only shorter. So he and the director went up and regaled us with stories about stalking Dustin Hoffman in a womens clothing store, lesbians and strippers, and the odd mention of the actual film. Of course, we had to listen to the answers to questions like "What was it like to work with Bill Murray?" and "What's the editing process like?" Yeah, great. It was funny to see them talking, though, since I guess they've been friends for five years. It was just surprisingly informal. And the director kept making faces at his assistant. Scwartzman also does a pretty good Dustin Hoffman impression.
Then we went and loitered around Philly. Stood at a bus stop for about a half hour and watched some guy water his plants with the aid of a McDonald's cup. I'm surprised he didn't call the cops.
Oh, and I learned what poutine is.
