3pipeproblem: (are they even necessary?)

Last night I basically blundered across Stars (ok, not really, but I managed to get the wrong time and location for the show) and it was amazing. It was in a pretty sketchy part of Philadelphia, so I had to walk over several blocks strewn with broken glass (I'm not exaggerating) in order to get there and then wait in line for a good half hour, but it was well worth it. The opener was a guy named Magnet (not named Magnet...you know what I mean) who was pretty good. Well, his singing was excellent. His lyrics could've used some work, but seeing as he was from Norway, I cut him some slack. He also had an unnerving habit of closing his eyes as he was singing and I kept thinking of About a Boy. But anyway.

Stars was incredible. A great band to see live (she said, having seen a total of three bands live) because of the vocal dynamics of the songs--it's all interplay between a male and a female singer, which was nice to see. Besides, the lead singer Torquil Campbell, besides having the best name ever (and being a former Shakespearean actor? I had to look all this up, by the way) hopped around the stage crazily and brought...I suppose I'll call it intensity to the songs. Character, maybe. He wasn't entirely serious about what he was doing, but you could tell he was passionate. He was also drinking whiskey from a plastic cup between songs. He also plays the trumpet (the band has a violinist as well). Furthermore, he also looks like

Sorry, this was the best picture I could find.

They played two of my favorites, "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" and "One More Night (Your Ex-Lover Remains Dead)" and dedicated a song called "Liar" to Dick Cheney. It was just great all-round. I bought myself a spiffy t-shirt with lyrics from "Your Ex-Lover," too.

Finally, music. They played each and every one of these songs last night.

Ugh. I'm jealous! But you know what... Dylan's going to be here in april and I'm contemplating selling my ass to go. I may buy the tickets on my credit card. Now that it's all paid off. Haha.

Yeah, I know. Just the other day I had someone tell me that Hugh Dillon and I are like twins.

In other (not particularly related) news, I want to name my first child Torquil.

But then you'll have to deal with the shame of knowing your child is named after One of Us. (I feel like there should be dramatic music after that.)

Ha, that'll be nothing next to the shame the kid'll suffer.
