Classes have ended, so you can look forward to me spamming your friendslist with greater frequency.

OMG Miller's Crossing. I somehow misplaced my copy and had to buy another, which means I've bought 3 copies of this film. And damn, it's worth it.

Safe is also one of the scariest damn films I've ever seen. I also wrote an analytical essay about it that happened to be published, so I may be biased in its favor.

And Lone Star! I don't have much to say about that except "Chris Cooper!!"

Actually, I've seen a ton of these (including Great Expectations! Chris Cooper again!).

*pounces*

You're freeeeeeee! I'll see you there in a week or three!

You need to educate me in the world of film. I have come across many people who are frequently amazed I haven't seen suchandsuch. So. Where should I start?

Oh boy. What's your favorite movie? I'll try to figure out what you'd like.

Um.

I haven't really thought about my favorite movie, but I can give you a list of ones that I liked: The Mummy, Donnie Darko, Equilibrium, Spirited Away, Muppet Treasure Island, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... those are misleading. I'm not helping.

I like witty things; I am not a fan of gratuitous gore, but I can take graphic sex fine, who knows why. (Like, for instance, I loved reading the Fight Club script, but I think I'd cringe and shy away if I watched it.) I like films I can think about afterwards, but not necessarily be wandering around for weeks still going, "Huh?" I am a fan of humor; I thought Closer was pointless; I pretty much haven't seen hardly any of "The Classics".

Dear God, how can you stand Brendan Fraser?

Okay, this'll probably be less systematic than I'd like, but here are some quasi-classics from the '60s and '70s you should take a look at. These are what got me into film in the first place: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President's Men (William Goldman wrote the screenplays for both) are both witty and fairly...well, I can't in good conscience describe APM as "lighthearted." They're both witty. Definitely see The Graduate if you haven't. Dog Day Afternoon. Taxi Driver, although that's a little more depressing than the others (but I love it). Dr. Strangelove. Annie Hall.

I always cite Lawrence of Arabia as my favorite movie, but I'm not gonna lie--watching it requires a lot of endurance. It's over three hours and just...full of desert vistas and intensely emotional scenes and Peter O'Toole is prettier than any man has a right to be...definitely see it, but make sure you're in the right mood. Speaking of O'Toole, Becket is also superb and it has the added bonus of Richard Burton ♥

Another movie I'd recommend but caution you before choosing to watch is Apocalypse Now. Okay, well, I'd recommend it and I love it beyond belief. As far as Coppola goes, you'd probably be better off watching The Godfather trilogy first--those are easier to follow and probably better films (excluding the third). But Apocalypse Now is this cracked out, Martin Sheen in Vietnam, Heart of Darkness-y madness that's just fucking incredible. Watch the original version if you can get it; the Redux has a couple scenes that in my opinion are unnecessary and screw with the pacing.

Any Coen brothers movie is recommended...I think the only one I haven't seen in its entirety is Blood Simple. I love Miller's Crossing, as a cursory glance at my journal will demonstrate. O Brother, Where art Thou? and Fargo are probably the most popular. I'd maybe watch O Brother first to get a feel for their sense of humor. The Big Lebowski is, of course, a law unto itself. Barton Fink is excellent. I liked Intolerable Cruelty.

Oh, I have so many others. Magnolia, Dark City; Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Adaptation are both great and were written by the guy who did Eternal Sunshine. Memento. It's not a great film, but I enjoyed Matchstick Men--it's about two con men, one of whom has OCD. Quiz Show is great. It's full of uber-snobbish with that I still rip off on occasion. I'm sure you'd love it. There's definitely a scene where Ralph Fiennes/Charles Van Doren (oh yeah, did I mention it has Ralph Fiennes?) and his father conduct an entire conversation in quotations from Shakespeare. You'd probably like Rushmore.

Oh man was that long. And I'm sure I'll add more later.

Oh! Roger Dodger. Roger Dodger and Miller's Crossing are the two movies from which I most frequently steal lines for Alan.

The Last Waltz!

Hahahaha, I was harassed on AIM by one of my friends. I figured I'd better post. I also have a bunch of Colbert icons that need using.

Miller's Crossing is ALWAYS worth it. I still live in hope that some how, someday, we WILL have a Miller's Crossing Special Edition with Director's Commentary. Someday. I have faith. :)

I once swore I'd taped a William H. Macy TV-movie and couldn't prove it for about three years until I finally found the tape somewhere. It was surreal.

Safe scares the hell out of me, Xander Berkeley aside.

HAHAHAHA. Yeah, I have no idea where it went because it's one of my favorite movies and I have a DVD binder, so you'd think I'd be able to keep track of it.

Horror movies don't scare me, but Safe freaked me the hell out.
