So, in the midst of completing several obnoxious assignments for school, I stumbled across Michael Chabon's website (at michaelchabon.com. Who knew?). There, I discovered several important things:

1) Chabon will be in Pittsburgh on Feb. 5 (incidentally, this is on or around the day the new Bloc Party album comes out)! Pittsburgh's far enough from Philly that I'll probably have to fly, but come hell or high water, I will be there.

2) He has compiled on his website unflattering things said about his works. Some of these are highly entertaining. For instance: “This is Michael Chabon's first book. Somebody must have liked it.”

3) And this one's especially for [livejournal.com profile] dien, the Chabonless heathen. He's written an article about cake-baking. And cookbooks. And how his mom gave him cookbooks when he was a kid. It's amazing, I promise you.

Have an excerpt:

This may be a male aspect of cookery, a pursuit that combines three classic male modes of gratification: the mastering of an arcane lore bound up in accumulable tomes, mindless repetition (the thing that makes boys take up card tricks, free-throw shooting, video games), and the staking of everything on a last throw of the dice. Cooking satisfies the part of me that enjoys struggling for days to transfer an out-of-print vinyl record by Klaatu to digital format, screwing with scratch filters and noise reducers, only to have the burn fail every time at the very same track. I’m not at all saying a woman cook doesn’t feel the same kind of mad urge to keep ruining the same dish over and over until she gets it right. I’m just saying that every woman I’ve ever known has mocked me for being that way.

Ahahahaha. That is all.

ETA: I lie. That is not all. [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce, I hope you don't mind my "borrowing" your tagging style.

ETA2: CHABON WRITING ABOUT DYLAN. I can now die happy.

...I did not know Chabon until this, but his website makes me tempted to hit Pittsburgh for seeing anyway.

Also, Pittsburgh.

He is amazing. If you're even remotely in the area, I'd go. He's supposed to be giving a "talk" with somebody else, so I'm not sure what that means, but still, it's Chabon. It's bound to be delightful.

(His first book--the one that somebody must have liked--is The Mysteries of Pittsburgh. He went to college there.)

Made from Bisquick! Maybe Alan and Gabe could've handled that but somehow I doubt it.

HAHAHAHA. Why is it so expensive? I want a copy!

I guess you know what to get me for Christmas.

OK, so just today -- JUST TODAY -- I was thinking that Pittsburgh is probably the major city that is closest to me that I have never visited.

What day of the week is Feb. 5? Because if I can I will totally meet you there.

(Also, you are CLOSE to my tagging style, but my tagging style lacks spaces).

It's a Monday. *crosses fingers*

My other discovery for the day is that ff.net has an Arrested Development section. Here's an honest-to-god summary of one of the fics: George Micheal and Maeby come closer as they realize that their love can not be denied.

Heh, I have classes Monday and Tuesday, but maybe I could figure out a way to cancel or reschedule --

Yes, you can! I have absolute faith in your ability to get out of teaching. It's for Art!
