Eeeeeevil. This just makes me want to write him, and he's the one character (well, him and Rosa) not at all involved in my plot bunny.

Also, it's really hard to develop fanon for the co-main character of a 600-page novel. I keep thinking things like "Joe likes bananas! ...wait, that's canon." Incidentally, my favorite canon fact about Joe is that he keeps two handkerchiefs, one for personal use and the others for girls to cry on. If only I could get away with having Alan do that.

1. As the son of two doctors, Joe has a genetic predisposition towards godawful handwriting. Making his writing legible demands effort and concentration--more effort and concentration than laying out an Escapist panel or performing some act of prestidigitation. (Sammy, of course, can read his writing no matter what, although sometimes he holds the paper upside down or pretends Joe's writing in code.)

2. Thomas taught Joe to wolf whistle. Thomas was six at the time; he demonstrated the technique and before Joe could have second thoughts, he turned around and demanded to know how Thomas had done it.

3. Joe doesn't mind speaking imperfect English (although he did when he was younger). It means he can feign incomprehension when convenient, and sometimes he just likes cobbling together sentences from things he's heard on the street.

Bonus, although I think this is pretty much canon: Joe is really good in bed. With his hands in particular, although he received excellent instruction in all matters from Thomas's governess.
