This weekend, I watched Heroes. It's definitely not the sort of show I could or would watch on a weekly basis--too many of the characters are either dull as dirt or actively annoying, and I wound up checking my email during most of their scenes (I'm looking at you, Peter Petrelli!)--but the fact that there was one overarching storyline was enough to keep me interested for...three days or so.
Mr. Bennet is awesome. My favorite episode by far was "Company Man" (although any episode that contains 0 Peter Petrelli is probably bound to be my favorite). After a cursory examination of Heroes fandom, I'm kind of astounded by what most people choose to write about. Surely there's a good fic out there about Bennet and Claude working as partners.
I also liked Parkman quite a bit, though it was kind of weird how his wife essentially disappeared during the last part of the season. He had some great lines--all I can remember right now is Bennet giving him this long description of the dire consequences that will result if Parkman's unable to get them past security, and Parkman's like, "A 'no' would've sufficed." Bennet thinking in Japanese was also win.
Like the rest of the internets, I love Hiro & Ando. I was kind of amazed at how well they pulled off the Hiro/Charlie storyline (even if it was ridiculously short), since most of show's female characters are pretty uninteresting. And I think the actors are absolutely wonderful--the characters would probably be pretty lame in someone else's hands, but Hiro's optimism and enthusiasm are convincing and sometimes contagious. Hahahaha, and Ando's weakness for women was done well, too. I loved the scene where Hiro sniffed and went, "Are you wearing cologne?" Having their conversations in Japanese with subtitles was kind of ballsy (although I guess they might be figuring on some viewers being anime fans) and I'm glad they went with it.
In less squeeful news...
Peter Petrelli is retarded. I knew this before I watched the show, but oh my god. If I never hear about how compassionate he is, or how he's a dreamer, or how he can love unconditionally ever again, it'll be much too soon. He's just...an idiot. I'm not especially fond of Milo Ventimiglia's "acting," either. Even his screaming (which, God knows, he does a lot), yelling, and choking is fairly unconvincing. He and Lake Bell need a show (preferably one where they both play marine biologists) so they can act at each other with their foreheads.
I also thought Nikki, DL, Micah, Isaac and Simone were pretty damn boring. And the show's writers seemed so enamored of Nikki's storyline, which I didn't find at all interesting. So many of the characters have very little backstory (not that I need tons and tons of exposition within the first three minutes of meeting them *cough*MOHINDER*cough*) and are defined simply in terms of their powers, the people they love, and the drugs they happen to abuse. Isaac, for instance, is a fairly prominent character during the first 2/3 of the season, and all we really know about him is that he's a painter, he is/was addicted to heroin, he can paint the future, and he loves Simone. Oh, and I guess that he and Simone liked to make out on her dad's roof. I'm all for revealing things a little bit at a time, but we learn nothing about Isaac beyond those facts. That's barely a sentence! They couldn't have added just a little more depth?
I did, however, love the Simone/Isaac/Peter triangle, because I didn't give a shit about any of the characters. Simone would be dramatically interrogating Isaac about Peter's wherabouts and guess what? I didn't care! Isaac would be shooting at Peter and guess what? I didn't care! I LOLed--literally--when Simone was shot, because everyone in that love triangle is an idiot and really, what did they expect?
Mohinder is also boring. I almost didn't get past the first part of the first episode because of the terrible exposition. His voiceovers are either irritating or comical, depending on how much I've had to drink.
Oh, and I like Claire (I like her whole family, actually), but how the hell is Peter/Claire such a huge ship? Other than "they're both pretty." I saw the first couple scenes they were in together--meeting at the tropy case, running around in the school, and then talking at the hospital--and they didn't overwhelm me with chemistry. Of course, this could be because Peter always seems like he's just been conked on the head with a massive rock.
And now that I've seen the finale, I'm kind of over the show. I'd just like to write a Hiro & Ando & Alan & Denny fic. With time travel.
The guy who was rooming with me left behind a bottle of Kahlua and an entire cheesecake. I could not have asked for more.

Date: 2007-05-28 07:41 pm (UTC)Yeah, pretty much. I also wanted Mr. Muggles to turn out to have superpowers. I asked my friend if he would and my friend said, "I don't want to spoil you." What a punk.
I don't understand why everyone wants to write about the least interesting characters! I almost signed up for a ficathon, but I realized I'd have to put "will not write Peter Petrelli" on my sign-up.

Date: 2007-05-28 08:59 pm (UTC)And ugh, the exposition. Truly awful. It plagued the AU futuristic episode, too, which by all rights should have been awesome and instead...wasn't.

Date: 2007-06-02 06:45 pm (UTC)THE QUESTION IS: is it three am., half you eaten half the cheesecake.
Date: 2007-05-29 05:42 am (UTC)I think what I like best is that it's pretty much just super funtime crackstravaganza. "HERE'S SOME BROTHERS WHO ARE STRANGELY CLOSE. HERE'S ALI LARTER BEING HOT WITH MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES. BTW BRAINS LOLOLOL"
I haven't had so much fun watching tv in like ages, and I'm horribly, horribly difficult to keep entertained for the most part.
Ps. I can see Peter/Claire just because he seems like FREAKISHLY OBSESSED with her? And not in a "CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE" way. More like "CHILDREN ARE MY FUTURE COME TO ME CLAIRE btw you might have to shoot me that okay lol" But he would probably be that way even if the cheerleader wasn't conveniently related to him. Sylar is for brains, Hiro is for nerd playtime, and the Petrellis are for "we're in ur show, thinkin bout ur hot underage cuz moar than u might b comfortable wit."
THE ANSWER: the cheesecake is about 1/6 gone. *fails at gluttony*
Date: 2007-05-29 08:58 pm (UTC)Actually, I found the whole mindwipe thing hysterically funny.
It's kind of like watching 24--you just have to sit back and not ask too many questions. I do like the flexibility the show has thanks to all the crazy superpowers. The 5YG AU could've been great.
P.S. I noticed he was freakishly obsessed, but I guess I chalked that up to his obvious mental deficiency. It's like...a small child who's just learned to speak repeating the last word they heard. (It's kind of like everyone on the show repeating "Save the cheerleader, save the world.") I really can't imagine Peter in a relationship because he is RETARDED and there would be CONSENT ISSUES (on his part).
Your insight into Peter's thought process, by the way, is uncanny. I'm 99% sure he thinks in capslock.
