Yeah. I really am a loser, in case anyone was still wondering.
So I was leafing through The Transformation Process in Joyce's Ulysses and I happened upon this:
"The relevance of Sherlock Holmes to Ulysess has been discussed at some length by Hugh Kenner. Kenner's case is that Holmes and Watson are an epitome of the split in Victorian consceince between romantic egoism and materialistic determinism, or between 'ratiocinative violence and sentimental virtue.'...I would say that Joyce tried to elevate the clue into an epiphany, and thereby redeem Holmes, or his creator."
Blah blah blah, Conan Doyle's surname appears in Nestor, blah blah blah.
Seriously, I was thinking of writing my paper on Holmes appearing in Ulysses, since Bloom's grandfather practically quotes the guy and at one point Joyce uses Holmes' name as a verb. Plus, my teacher mentioned that there've been essays written hypothesizing that Holmes is the (unidentified) man in the macintosh. But...nah. It's a little late to change topics anyway. Just thought I'd share because reading that was crazy weird.
