I just got back from the Philo welcoming party thing. It was great fun. I think I became absolutely sure this was the right place for me when I mentioned James Spader and two random people who hadn't been listening to the conversation all that closely turned to me and simulataneously yelled "JAMES SPADER!" Ah, yes. And we discussed American Psycho and the differences between the novel Less Than Zero (which I must read) and the film. And we just talked a lot. It was very fun, especially after my ethno-political conflict recitation, which consisted of people attempting to sound smart by bringing up famous studies not at all related to the topic at hand. "What about Harlow's monkeys?" "What about Hobbes?" Uh, we're discussing nationalism and Terror Management Theory, but whatever... In retrospect, I should have brought up Ulysses. Hey, it has to do with nationalism. Bloom is part of an "out-group." I'll stop. I'm making myself sick.

Anyway, in regards to the subject line. I'm editing two papers for a workshop in queer cinema tomorrow. Man. I'm still on the first one, and it's not looking good. I'd quote it, but I'd feel bad. It's just complete plot summary, and some of the sentences are so fucked I don't even know where to start on them. It's like some of the stuff on ff.net. I'm attending a prestigious university! This shouldn't be happening!

Oh well. Maybe I'll finish so that tomorrow I'll have time to do things besides homework.

God, I'd so like to read any or all of the following: Seabiscuit, The Orchid Thief, the rest of Diary, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, The End of the Affair, The Great Gatsby, The Merchant of Venice, Lullaby, anything related to Holmes, some of Ondaatje's poetry, Songbook, Less Than Zero, American Psycho...I should just spend an entire weekend reading. Hey, I wonder if we have El Viejo Que Leia Novelas de Amor in our library. I really shouldn't check, as that'll be another thing to read...

I've really been wanting to read The Orchid Thief too. I highly, highly recommend Seabiscuit. I'm an equestrienne, so of course I wanted to read it, but even my mom, who is terrified of my horse, loved it. A very good read.

I started reading it at the end of the summer, but never got past the first section on Charles (which I vaguely recall liking) because I was reading so many books at once. It's a constant problem of mine. Likewise, I've read about 150 pages of The Orchid Thief, which is brilliant, by the way. Laroche is my hero.
