Shorefic for [livejournal.com profile] 15minuteficlets. Becky made me do it and then abandoned me. Go figure.

Examination

There was nothing quite so satisfying as surveying a blank test, secure in the knowledge that you had all the answers.

The fact that this was the ethics final, and that those answers had been obtained through decidedly unethical means (involving the bribery of a janitor and some creative filing), made the victory all the more satisfying. Shore skimmed through the packet, glanced over the essay questions just for the sake of appearances.

He heard people around him shifting nervously, could register foot tapping and pencil chewing and...well, he couldn't hear people glancing at the clock, but he was pretty sure some high strung overachiever with a perfect GPA had started already. He grinned, toying with the idea of placing the questions to the side in a neat little stack. So he could focus his attention on the answer sheet, on the completely meaningless string of letters he'd carefully committed to memory several days earlier, over several cups of coffee. Last minute studying never helped anyone, after all.

In the end, he played it safe--he did desire to graduate. After all, it was the reason he'd been stuck taking the class in the first place. He scribbled his name at the top of the page, and answered the first question incorrectly. There wasn't any need to arouse suspicion.

An hour later, he let out a sigh and leaned back in his chair. For some reason he felt supremely content, as though he'd actually accomplished something. And to be fair, he had.

Or maybe it was just the delicious irony of it all that ultimately made it worth it.

He sealed the test with a steady hand, placed it on the stack with a smug smile directed at no one in particular. He even held the door open for a rather plain-looking girl as they exited the classroom.

In fact, it wasn't until thirty minutes later, when he was sharing a victory drink with some friends, that he choked a little and, sputtering an apology, excused himself. He shrugged at himself in the bathroom mirror. It wasn't guilt. Couldn't have been.

He really needed to learn to hold his liquor.
