I've seen quite a few movies in the past few days, so I figured I'd offer my thoughts in different entries to keep people's heads from exploding. I rewatched American Beauty after Brad mentioned Kevin Spacey and Chris Cooper kissing and I totally didn't remember it. Even when Sammi confirmed his suspicions. I remembered specific lines from the film...but I had no recollection of the scene between them in the garage! And I'm sure I'd seen the movie at least twice before, so it wasn't like I left the room or something. Weird.

Anyway, I never really thought much of Chris Cooper's character (Col. Frank Fitts; I think I'll just call him Frank) before, probably because I didn't see The Scene. I just thought he was a homophobe. One with a Nazi plate. But if you look closer (ok, that was a pun on the movie's tagline. I'm sorry. I know I'm going to hell.) he's this really conflicted guy. It's kind of cute and very angsty. There are all these scenes where he's about to say something to Ricky...but then he stops. He does it with Lester, too. It's so sad. Of course, his homophobia is typical reaction formation (I'm surprised no one mentioned it as an example in psych) but someone probably taught him that that lifestyle was wrong. Either his parents or the Marine Corps, I'm betting. I love all of the scenes with him in them. Well, I love the whole movie, but Chris Cooper is absolutely perfect.

Kevin Spacey is a mad genius, of course. And really cute. He has some of the greatest lines in the movie. "Don't you think it's weird and kind of fascist?" "1970 Pontiac Firebird: the car I always wanted and now I have it. I rule!" Plus he listens to Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" rather than Hendrix's.

Did I mention that I love all the double meanings in The Scene? "You're shaking. We should get you out of those clothes." I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

There's a lot more to say about the film, of course, but I'm sure others have already said it.

And, damn it, why do I have to have the same name as Carolyn Burnham?
