Ugh. School keyboard. So slow.
Nov. 3rd, 2003 02:20 pmSo, I had my Irish Lit class (nearly wrote Ulysses class there) and my teacher asked about Halloween before we started (we talked about Oxen of the Sun, incidentally, and Stephen's bitterness towards his mother that cannot be remedied with words, but that's not the point)--did we have fun, did we dress up, etc.
Then, as a joke: "Anyone dress up as Bloom?"
I, of course, did not say anything. I didn't even have a coughing fit, which I thought was rather mature of me. But still. It was funny as all hell.
Then there was the quiz question "What does Bloom write in the sand on the beach?
a) I AM, b) I AM A, c) I AM HERE or d) LB [heart] MB."
Well, I found it funny. Hilarious, actually. Although I would have preferred LB [heart] SD, but that's just me.
As if that weren't enough, he went on to point out a scene (14.80 or so for anyone with a copy. Yes, Ulysses is my Bible) where Bloom is walking with a nun. It's in middle english, so it's hard to understand. But the nun is all "Poor guy. He's Jewish, I should convert him so he doesn't burn in hell." And she crosses herself and all.
Meanwhile, Bloom is thinking, "Wonder what it'd be like to sleep with a nun?"
So yes. My day has been made. I'm looking forward to "Circe," which is in screenplay format. And the Stephen/Bloom fanfic is coming soon.
